Standing Rock Medicine Wheel Living Park
Summer Solstice Gathering
The Medicine Wheel Living Park is a 65-acre park located on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The park is a grass roots, volunteer-run community organization focused on Earth sustainability practices, food sovereignty and reconnection to Lakota culture and Mother Earth. Founded by Robert & Beth White Mountain in 2009, “Our goal is to offer ways of understanding how we can attain an eco-friendly, socially just, and harmonious co-existence with each other and our sacred Grandmother Earth, and also to bring hope to the children and people of the 3rd poorest county in the nation.”
In 2018, the Medicine Wheel Living Park hosted a Summer Solstice Celebration for the local community so that they could come together, share knowledge, listen to music, and reconnect to the Earth by planting trees. The gathering featured Lakota elders, Lakota youth, and various speakers on earth sustainability practices, natural health, tree planting, earth building, as well as kids activities. Live music included Lyla June, Tee Iron Cloud, The Grand River Singers, George & the MC’s, Highway 212, Tchiya Amet Band, and Kevin Locke.
